Abstract:
Whether high-level visual information can be processed unconsciously remains controversial, here we propose that the need of attention in such processes could play a key role. In this talk, I will first establish that high-level linguistic information can be processed unconsciously. The results challenge the current accounts of unconscious processing and lead to a deeper examination of the automaticity of unconscious processing. In the second half of the talk, I will turn to the other extreme of human visual perception: photoreception. An fMRI experiment targeting a class of ganglion photoreceptors dedicated largely to non-visual processing reveals a pathway to study the neural correlates of unconscious processing. Tackling these issues paves the way for better understanding of unconscious processing and potentially leads to a re-examination of the functions of consciousness.
