Abstract:
Much of the work to date on Peking opera and gender has paid attention to male actors’ cross-dressing to play women. In contrast, this talk centers on well-known male impersonator Meng Xiaodong (1908–1977), who was recognized as the most qualified successor of the Yu school (Yu pai). Meng Xiaodong’s significance not only lies in her artistic achievements, but also sheds light on the transformation and performativity of gender roles during the 1920s to 1940s. Her art destabilized actors’ dominant positions in theater across the late imperial to Republican eras, while the media reportage surrounding her points to actresses’ continued struggles to escape from normative gender expectations since the late imperial era. Concomitantly, the western-imported novel term, “new women” (xinnüxing or xinfunü), disrupted the existing structure of female sexuality and caused chaos about the actress’ gender roles. Through analyzing tabloid articles surrounding Meng Xiaodong, I begin with an interrogation of the actress’ “body problem,” that is, the assumption that actresses’ bodies were available for the viewing pleasure of patrons and audiences, both on and off the stage. I then scrutinize affective experiences of actresses, patrons, and audiences centering on the problem to crystalize the morphology of Chinese eroticism and examine how the eroticism, in turn, shaped the affective encounters and, even, contributed to the transformation of gender roles. Ultimately, I argue that Meng Xiaodong showcased resistance against Peking opera actors’ fixed performativity of genders in everyday life, further reflecting changes in gender discourses in the Republican era.

Abstract:
We investigate three factors considered crucial in assessing the deservingness of a recipient of income redistribution: effort, luck, and need. Individuals rely on effort cues to assess deservingness, but need and effort push deservingness in opposite directions. More effort generally results in lower need. But unlucky individuals can be needy, despite exerting effort. Based on a model of conditional altruism, we design a real-effort experiment with two conditions: one where luck is observable to the redistributor, and one where luck is unobservable. Comparative static predictions derived from the model were pre-registered as hypotheses. When luck is observable, responses to both need and effort are consistent with the predictions of the model, and we observe clearly identifiable types: those who are insensitive to effort and respond only to need, and others who respond exclusively to effort. Without information about luck, however, the effort cue was obscured and the need effect predominated

Abstract:
Despite the remarkable achievement of machine learning in various fields, such as music recommendations of Spotify and neural language translation of Google, designing responsible and accountable ML systems remains a significant problem because of the practical requirements of the stakeholders and the regulations in different domains. Interpretable machine learning hereby provides the transparency of the particular decisions made by machine learning systems. The interpretable machine learning tackles the critical problem that humans cannot understand the behaviors of complex machine learning models and how these models arrive at a particular decision. From this perspective, this talk will mainly focus on introducing interpretable machine learning from both theoretical aspects and its applications.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Subthalamotomy using transcranial magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound (tcMRgFUS) is a novel and promising treatment for Parkinson’s Disease (PD). In this study, we investigate if baseline brain imaging features can be early predictors of tcMRgFUS-subthalamotomy efficacy, as well as which are post-treatment brain changes associated with the clinical outcomes. Towards this aim, functional and structural neuroimaging and extensive clinical data from thirty-five PD patients enrolled in a double-blind tcMRgFUS-subthalamotomy clinical trial were analysanalyzeded.
Multivariate cross-correlation analysis revealed that the baseline multi-modal imaging data significantly explain (P<0.005, FWE-corrected) the inter-individual variability in response to treatment. Most predictive features at baseline included neural fluctuations in distributed cortical regions and structural integrity in the putamen and parietal regions. Additionally, a similar multivariate analysis showed that the population variance in clinical improvements is significantly explained (P<0.001, FWE-corrected) by a distributed network of concurrent functional and structural brain changes in frontotemporal, parietal, occipital, and cerebellar regions, as opposed to local changes in very specific brain regions. Overall, our findings reveal specific quantitative brain signatures highly predictive of tcMRgFUS-subthalamotomy responsiveness in PD. The unanticipated weight of a cortical-subcortical-cerebellar subnetwork in defining clinical outcomes extends the current biological understanding of the mechanisms associated with clinical benefits.

Abstract:
Environmental states affect our day-to-day emotions and decisions, including our choices under risk and uncertainty. Past studies have found that an unexpected positive outcome, such as a sunny day after a streak of cloudy days, can increase gambling behaviors. To extend these findings with the broader environmental events to more personal daily life activities at a shorter time scale, we performed longitudinal examinations of the correlation between various daily activities and the change of mood and decision of risk within the individual. Our aim is to identify how engagement in different activities could predict the temporal change in mood and risk preferences. In the talk, I will present data showing how the amount of a particular activity spent last week correlates with the risk attitude-related variables. Among all activities data we had gathered, our finding suggests that subjects have less negative emotion and become more risk-tolerant with more sleep time.

Abstract:
Yen, Phys. Rev. E 104, L042303 (2021).

Abstract:
The Ionospheric CONnection Explorer (ICON) spacecraft launched in the deep solar minimum of late 2019 and joined the troop of Earth’s upper atmosphere monitors including Global-scale Observations of the Limb and Disk (GOLD). Due to the spatial and temporal entanglement and limited coverage of data, integrating the space-borne observations from different platforms is a challenging task and usually requires support from whole atmospheric modeling. Integrating the observations from both ICON and GOLD provides a broader and more comprehensive view of the upper atmosphere, spatially and temporally. Taking the advantages of the rapid development of artificial intelligence, the applications of the machine learning algorithms and neural networks on space sciences is foreseeable.

Abstract:

Abstract:
On April 13th, 2029, a Potential Hazardous Asteroid (PHA) 99942 Apophis will visit Earth at a distance about 36700 ± 9000 km, which is almost the altitude of geosynchronous satellites. Such a close approach of an asteroid will provide an extraordinary opportunity to study a PHA in great detail and to raise public awareness of planetary defense. Here we propose a mission concept “ACE (Apophis Close Encounter)” which aims to rendezvous with Apophis prior to its 2029 flyby and to shepherd the asteroid for several months to investigate its possible evolution induced by the tidal force of Earth. The mission is scheduled to launch in August 2028 and expected to end in late August or early September of 2029 with a lifetime of around 280 days.

Abstract:
East Asian social welfare has been described as productivist, where social policies are subordinate to economic development. However, existing East Asian comparative studies often focus on a few selected social policies and seldom examine welfare programs as a bundle. We contribute to the depiction of divergent features of East Asian safety nets by welfare content (generosity, coverage, protective vs. productive, and work incentives) and welfare outcomes (poverty reduction and redistribution) in mainland China, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan.
We collected model family data before and during the COVID-19 pandemic and analyzed the data through descriptive statistics and regression models. We found that Taiwan and Japan have more generous welfare systems in reducing poverty and redistributing income, while Korea has a less generous system and focuses on productive programs; Hong Kong is catching up with the aforementioned societies through adopting generous protective programs; Singapore offers wide coverage and work incentives for low-income families yet lags behind in generosity; and China appears to be a laggard of welfare provision in the region. Our findings reveal heterogeneity within East Asian welfare system, and our synthesis of welfare features using model family data exemplifies a promising strategy in conducting comparative research in regions with limited comparable data.

Abstract:
Turbulence generated by aquatic vegetation plays a vital role in the interfacial transfer process at the air-water interface and sediment-water interface (AWI and SWI), impacting the dissolved oxygen (DO) level, a key indicator of water quality for aquatic ecosystems. This research investigates how flow-vegetation interactions affect suspended sediment dynamics and the interfacial transfer process across sediment-water-air interfaces in unidirectional vegetated flows. A series of laboratory experiments in a unidirectional recirculating flume with simulated rigid vegetation and a sediment bed was conducted to investigate the influence of vegetation under different submergence ratios and plant densities. The experimental result shows how different scales of vegetation-generated turbulence affect the interfacial gas transfer rate at different submergence ratios and array densities. This study is expected to provide critical insight for future studies on water quality management and ecosystem restoration in natural vegetated water environments such as lakes, rivers, and wetlands.

Abstract:
In the United States, over 7 million people use insulin as a peptide drug to treat diabetes given its ability to promote the glucose absorption from the blood into liver. While oral insulin drugs are highly desirable due to their non-invasive nature, their development is limited by their susceptibility to the enzymes in the gastrointestinal tract and poor permeability through the intestinal epithelium upon dimerization. Recent experimental studies have revealed that certain O-linked glycosylation patterns could enhance insulin’s proteolytic stability and reduce its dimerization propensity, but the understanding of such phenomena at the molecular level is still evasive. In addition, the enormous efforts required for chemical synthesis and characterization make fast screening of insulin glycoform candidates nearly impossible.
To address this challenge, we propose and test several structural determinants that could potentially enhance insulin’s proteolytic stability and monomeric propensity. We used these as the metrics to assess the properties of interest from 10-microsecond aggregate molecular dynamics of each of 12 targeted insulin glyco-variants from multiple wild-type crystal structures. We found that glycan-involved hydrogen bonds and glycan-dimer occlusion were useful metrics predicting the proteolytic stability and dimerization propensity of insulin, as was in part the solvent accessible surface area of proteolytic sites, while other plausible metrics were not generally predictive. This work helps better explain how O-linked glycosylation influences the proteolytic stability and monomeric propensity of insulin, illuminating a path towards rational molecular design of insulin glycoforms.

Abstract:
The cognitive hierarchy (CH) approach posits that players in a game are heterogeneous with respect to levels of strategic sophistication. A level-k player believes all other players in the game have lower levels of sophistication distributed from 0 to k-1, and these beliefs correspond to the truncated distribution of a “true” distribution of levels. We extend the CH framework to extensive form games, where these initial beliefs over lower levels are updated as the history of play in the game unfolds, providing information to players about other players’ levels of sophistication. For a class of centipede games with a linearly increasing pie, we fully characterize the dynamic CH solution and show that it leads to the game terminating earlier than in the static CH solution for the centipede game in reduced normal form.

Abstract:

Abstract:
There could be as high as 8% of parents suffering from parental burnout—a chronic stress-related disorder experienced in the parental role. It is worrying because parental burnout jeopardizes both parental (e.g., suicidal ideations) and children’s (e.g., depression) adjustment. As regards its etiological antecedents, Western culture seems to play a crucial role: Western parents are five times more vulnerable to parental burnout than parents in the rest of the world. But why parents in the West are especially vulnerable to parental burnout? What factors shared by these communities can explain such an association?
To answer these questions, the present research focused on cultural factors and utilized both a top-down (i.e., with a priori hypotheses) and bottom-up (i.e., without a priori hypotheses) approach to examine which and how Western cultural factors predispose parents to parental burnout. Based on these findings, we further proposed and verified how to protect parents from parental burnout.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This work aims at discovering the potential of CO2 reduction by implementing techniques of process intensification in the production processes of green alternative fuel, dimethyl ether (DME), from CO2 and renewable hydrogen (H2) with both one-step and two-step configurations. A novel intensified process using the two-step configuration (named as TSHI), which converts CO2 to methanol followed by the dehydration of methanol to DME, is proposed in this study. Developed based on the validated thermodynamic representation and the reaction kinetics expression, TSHI shows the greatest potential of CO2 reduction – 1.704 ton CO2 / ton DME – among the five discussed process scenarios. Though TSHI exhibits high capability of reducing CO2 amount in the atmosphere, the result of techno-economic analysis showed that there are still rooms for further improvements to produce green alternative fuel cost-effectively.

Abstract:
We develop a game-theoretic model of sharing decisions among online users of a Twitter-like social network. Each agent has a subjective prior on an unobservable real-valued state. When receiving news, agents make a decision as to whether they should share the news with their followers based on how persuasive the news may be in moving their followers’ opinions closer to theirs, assuming a nominal cost for sharing. We characterize the dynamics of spread as an endogenous Susceptible-Infected (SI) epidemic process and derive agents’ sharing decisions and the size of the cascade spread at the equilibrium of the corresponding game. We show that low credibility news can result in a larger cascade than credible news when the network is highly connected. We further show that increased polarization in prior beliefs in the population prompts more sharing of lower credibility news, resulting in larger cascade size. Finally, we fully characterize the relationship between cascade size, network connectivity, and news credibility in terms of polarization and diversity of prior beliefs. Our results provide a theoretical foundation for recent empirical observations demonstrating faster and wider spread of low-credibility and false information on social networks. This is a joint work with Amir Ajorlou and my advisor Ali Jadbabaie.

Abstract:
The management of degenerative and age-related diseases are expected to be one of the prominent challenges to Taiwan’s medical system as the population ages. Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most prevalent and debilitating degenerative and age-related diseases, with its burden expected to increase by several folds around the globe due to population aging and risks factors such as increasing rates of obesity. Deep learning-based imaging biomarkers provide great promise in specifying novel treatments target, facilitating new strategies of early detection and prevention techniques, and identifying population that is vulnerable to disease progression and disability. It is therefore of great importance to explore these new opportunities to alleviate the burden of OA and other age-related musculoskeletal diseases, especially in an aging society of Taiwan. In this talk, we will cover our efforts to study morphological biomarkers of early OA and onset of OA by performing automatic knee MRI segmentation across various population and development of the explainable AI models to identify potential target of treatment of reducing osteoarthritis (OA) pain and minimizing likelihood of surgical intervention.
